Couples Counseling in Maine Using the Crucible® Approach

Rewire Obstacles to Authenticity and Intimacy

At The Maine Relationship Institute, couples in Maine work with Ben Borkan, LCSW, and MRI Founder, using the Crucible® Marital and Sex Therapy approach to address infidelity, intimacy loss, and communication breakdown.

Rather than teaching joint communication scripts, MRI aims to treat each partner as a whole individual and examines how each person contributes to the relational pattern, so personal growth within the relationship drives the change you want as a couple.

What is Couples Counseling at The Maine Relationship Institute?

Couples counseling at The Maine Relationship Institute uses the Crucible® Marital and Sex Therapy approach, treating each partner as a whole individual whose growth drives relational change.

Couples across Maine work with our therapist, Ben Borkan, including partners across the sex and gender spectrum, LGBTQ+ couples, and new parents.

Unlike couples work that treats only the relationship as the client, Crucible®-based counseling asks each partner structured self-examination questions and sets individual goals, so each person examines their own contribution to the pattern rather than rehearsing joint communication scripts.

We do not accept insurance, so couples pay out of pocket rather than billing a third-party payer.

This approach is not a fit if you are seeking only short-term behavioral coaching or communication scripts without individual reflection.

Is Crucible®-Based Couples Counseling the Right Approach for Our Relationship?

Crucible®-based couples counseling fits couples ready to examine their own individual contribution to the relationship, not only the couple's shared dynamic.

Couples in Maine navigating infidelity, intimacy loss, communication breakdown, or transitions such as new parenthood are the shape of work this approach is designed to hold.

  • Infidelity often calls for understanding each partner's role, not only the event itself.

  • Intimacy loss becomes a candidate for this work when it has settled into a pattern rather than a phase.

  • Persistent communication breakdown that hasn’t resolved through scripts, or new-parenthood tensions that both partners want to examine individually, are also strong fits.

Fees are paid out of pocket because the practice does not bill insurance. This approach may not suit couples looking only for short-term behavioral coaching without individual work.

Using Crucible Therapy in Couples Therapy

Many couples therapy approaches treat the relationship itself as the client and focus on joint communication skills and shared patterns between partners.

Crucible®-based counseling at The Maine Relationship Institute takes a different route, treating each partner as a whole individual and using structured self-examination questions and personal goals so that individual growth within the relationship becomes the mechanism of change.

The tradeoff is real. This approach asks more individual self-examination from each partner and will not suit couples seeking only short-term communication scripts or coaching without personal reflection.

Who Does The Maine Relationship Institute Work With?

The Sex & Gender Spectrum in Couples or Marriage Counseling

The Crucible® approach relies on each partner engaging in structured self-examination as part of the couples’ work.

If one partner is looking only for short-term behavioral coaching or joint communication scripts without individual reflection, this approach may not be the right match at this time.

What if One Partner is Not Willing To Do Individual Self-Examination?

At MRI, we work with couples in Maine, including partners across the sex and gender spectrum, LGBTQ+ couples, and new parents.
